Implant-Retained and Fixed Dentures

Dentures can be supported in different ways. In addition to conventional removable dentures, some dentures use dental implants to improve support and stability.

Removable Dentures

Rest on the gums and are taken out daily for cleaning.

Implant-Retained Dentures

Removable dentures that attach to dental implants placed in the jaw. These implants help hold the denture in place and may reduce movement during eating and speaking. The denture can still be removed for cleaning.

Fixed Dentures

Attached to dental implants that are placed in the jawbone and supported by the surrounding bone. They are designed to remain in place and are not intended to be removed by the patient. Cleaning is carried out in the mouth using appropriate aids.

Important to understand

Implant-retained and fixed dentures may provide increased stability compared to conventional dentures, but they do not function in the same way as natural teeth.

Cleaning requirements differ between options. Removable dentures can be taken out for cleaning, while fixed dentures require cleaning to be performed in the mouth using appropriate aids such as a water flosser.

Repair processes may also differ. Removable dentures may be repairable by denture clinics, while fixed dentures generally require removal by a dental professional before repair.

Suitability depends on individual factors such as bone availability, general health, and personal preferences.

A dental professional can assess which options may be appropriate in each situation.
