Denture Retention Aids
Clinical reference — for health professionals
When a denture becomes loose or uncomfortable, a range of aids can help improve stability. Adhesives are available over the counter; liners and tissue conditioners require a prosthetist. Adhesives are a short-term aid, not a substitute for professional review when the underlying fit has changed.
Denture Adhesives (over the counter)
| Type | Description | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Cream / Paste | Applied to the fitting surface before insertion. Creates a seal between denture and gum. | Moderate–strong looseness, xerostomia, lower dentures, new wearers. |
| Powder | Sprinkled onto a moistened denture. Thin adhesive layer forms on contact with saliva. | Mild retention problems where saliva levels are reasonable. |
| Strips / Wafers | Pre-formed adhesive pads placed on the denture base. No squeezing required. | Patients with reduced dexterity or carers assisting with denture placement. |
Liners & Tissue Conditioners (prosthetist required)
| Type | Description | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Soft Liner | Flexible material bonded to the inside of the denture base to cushion the gum tissue. | Thin or fragile gum tissue, persistent discomfort with hard denture base. |
| Silicone Liner | Long-lasting resilient liner that maintains softness over time. | Ongoing cushioning where pressure cannot be tolerated on the ridges. |
| Tissue Conditioner | Soft gel-like material that conforms to the tissue shape and distributes pressure evenly. | Healing irritated or inflamed tissues before a definitive reline or new denture. |
Adhesive Selection Guide
| Situation | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Mild looseness, well-fitting denture | Powder adhesive |
| Moderate looseness or reduced stability | Cream / paste adhesive |
| Lower denture with poor retention | Cream / paste adhesive |
| Xerostomia (dry mouth) | Cream / paste adhesive |
| Reduced manual dexterity | Adhesive strips or wafers |
| New wearer during adjustment | Cream adhesive (sparingly) |
| Immediate denture during healing* | Cream adhesive (sparingly) |
| Friable / atrophic mucosal tissue | Soft liner — refer to prosthetist |
| Markedly ill-fitting denture | Reline or replacement — refer to prosthetist |
* Do not apply adhesive to immediate dentures until initial wound closure has occurred.
When to refer to a prosthetist
- ✓Denture no longer retains adequately despite adhesive use
- ✓Patient using excessive amounts of adhesive to manage
- ✓Visible bone or tissue changes affecting fit
- ✓Persistent sore spots or mucosal irritation
- ✓Denture over 5 years old with signs of wear
Note on thermoplastic liners
Products like Cushion-Grip are not commercially available in Australia and are not a substitute for a professionally applied liner.
